Gruhler's 30 Points Leads Portland over Peninsula 76-49 in NWAC Sweet 16

PASCO, Wash. – The Portland Panthers opened their tournament run with a convincing 76-49 victory over the Peninsula Pirates on Wednesday in the Sweet 16 of the NWAC Men's Basketball Championship presented by Golf Universe.

The South Region champion Panthers (24-4) got a dominant performance from Kyle Gruhler, who dropped 30 points with 10 rebounds. Gruhler shot 6-for-11 from beyond the arc, stepping up for South Region MVP Jahvari Martino, who fouled out of the game early in the second half.

Portland led from start to finish as they show 51.7 percent from the floor while playing dominant defense, limiting the Pirates (15-15) to just 23.7 percent. The Panthers led by 34-22 at halftime and by as many as 29 points late in the second half.

Hayden Rose also had a nice overall game for PCC with 20 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists. The No. 4-seeded Pirates were led by Javon Ervin's 12 points and Ese Onakpoma's 11.

Portland moves onto the Elite 8, where they will take host on host Columbia Basin on Thursday at 2 p.m.
