Clackamas Men, Spokane Women Leading After Day 1 of NWAC Track & Field Championships

GRESHAM, Ore. – Day one of the 2024 NWAC Track & Field Championships ended with 14 individual athletes winning championships and a lot more to be decided on Monday at Mt. Hood Community College track and field.

Ten field events were finalized (five men and five women) while four running events (two men and women) completed on the first day of competition. Many more running events had their semifinals with the final cut advancing to Tuesday's final races.

Men's Track & Field
Clackamas had a strong showing on the men's side during day one, particularly in the field events as they lead the way with 55 points. Lane ranks second with 38.5 while Spokane is in third with 36.

The Cougars got wins in both the men's hammer throw and discus throw on Monday. Donaven Humphries won the hammer with a mark of 56.91 meters. He was also followed by a pair of teammates in Nikolas Strait and Andrew Turner for second and third. In the discus, it was Strait's turn to take the gold medal, winning the event with a mark of 49.31 meters. Teammate Henry Buckles placed second at 49.19 meters while Spokane's Dan Close placed third at 48.33 meters. Top three places in each event earn NWAC All-American honors.

Everett's Khalil Gilbert took the gold medal in the men's long jump, winning with a distance of 6.86 meters on his fifth attempt. Lane's Aaron Chao took second at 6.81 meters while Umpqua's James Kelly placed third at 6.79 meters.

Kelly later finished with a gold medal in the pole vault, reaching height of 4.88 meters. Lane's Dallas Coogan and Spokane's Gavin Hoskinson took second and third, respectively, each hitting a height of 4.83 meters.

As always, Lane was tough in the track events, taking first place in both the 10,000 meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Titans' RJ Kennedy placed first in the 10K in a thrilling race against Spokane's Luke Hurd. Kennedy and Hurd were neck and neck through 24 laps, but Kennedy broke away in the final 200 meters to win in 31:55.8. Hurd took second in 32:01.19 followed by Spokane's Gilbert Langat in 32:37.18.

Lane's Dublin Gingerich also won an exciting race in the final 100 meters of the steeplechase, narrowly besting Southwestern Oregon's Gabriel Weaver by less than a second. Gingerich finished in 9:46.41, followed by Weaver in 9:47.26 and Spokane's Zachary Kness in 9:48.23.

Women's Track & Field
On the women's side, Spokane holds a strong lead after day one with 60.5 points. The Sasquatch earned big points in the field events, specifically the long jump. Clark is in second with 39.5 points while Lane is in third with 36 points.

Spokane had five podium finishers in the women's long jump including the top two placers in Emma Glanzer and Lizbeth Soto. Glanzer won the event with a mark of 5.05 meters while Soto was just behind at 5.00 meters. SW Oregon's Alannah Gee took third at 4.88 meters.

Clackamas' Allison Otto-Fitzsimons won the women's pole vault for the second year in a row, clearing a height of 3.83 meters. Lane's Noreen Hussain placed second at 3.73 meters, while her teammate Saige Baumann finished third at 3.63 meters.

In the women's javelin, Everett's Denna Gibb won with a top throw of 41.83 meters. Spokane's Saira Schoener finished second in 39.16 meters and Umpqua's Kylie Rubrecht took third at 37.13 meters.

Rounding out the field events for the day, Lane's Guinevere Rydberg had a huge PR in the shot put of almost a meter on her final throw to win the event with a distance of 12.81 meters. Pierce's Pray'cess Kamuta placed second at 12.72 meters and Umpqua's Kylie Anderson finished third at 12.35 meters.

To start the day of action, Lane's Brinna Weiseth smoked the competition in the 10,000 meters, finishing in 38:00.48. Clark had the next two finishers in Chloe Crawford (42:37.1) and Soleil Bianchi (43:09.42).

Spokane closed out the day with a win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as Mary Nakamura won in 11:40.87 to score 10 points for the Sasquatch. Clark's Dani Buttrell took second in 12:09.8 while her teammate Lauren Filipczak finished third in 12:19.41.

The championship meet wraps up on Tuesday with the first events, the women's hammer throw and triple jump, beginning at 10 a.m. at Mt. Hood Community College.
