Day 1 of 2024 NWAC Softball Championship Wraps Up on Thursday
PORTLAND, Ore. - An exciting first day of the 2024 NWAC Softball Championship wrapped up on Thursday as 16 teams squared off over 16 total games to narrow the field down to 12 teams heading into Day 2.
Four teams were eliminated on Thursday while four teams remain unbeaten in the tournament and in prime position to make a deep run at the title. No. 1 and No. 2 seeds North Idaho and Mt. Hood showed off their pitching depth and top tier offenses as they each went 2-0. The Cardinals won games of 9-1 over No. 16 Grays Harbor and 12-3 against No. 8 Clackamas both by run rule in five innings. The Saints won 8-3 against No. 15 Yakima Valley and shut out No. 10 Columbia Basin 4-0 in their second game.
No. 6 Wenatchee Valley enjoyed one of the tournament's bigger upsets, knocking off No. 3 seed and defending champions Southwestern Oregon in the second round by an 8-4 score. The Knights aslo won 11-3 over Walla Walla as they will take on MHCC at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
No. 4 Lower Columbia started their tournament with an offensive outburst, defeating No. 13 Douglas 13-6. They then ended the night with a tight 5-4 win against No. 5 Spokane to remain unbeated. They matchup with NIC in round three at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
The first round on Friday will feature four elimniation games starting with Clackamas vs. No. 15 Yakima Valley. The Yaks earned their first-ever NWAC softball tournament win on Thursday with a 9-0 win over Treasure Valley, a team they were 0-4 against during the regular season. Spokane will take on region rival Walla Walla as the Sasquatch went 4-0 against the Warriors this season. SW Oregon faces No. 13 Douglas who ended Thursday with a close 9-8 win against No. 12 Everett. No. 7 Edmonds and Columbia Basin wrap up the first round of elimination games. The Tritons came back from down 6-2 in the fifth inning to defeat Grays Harbor 7-6, keeping their season alive on a walk-off hit by Jaylene Manriquez in the bottom of the seventh.
Treasure Valley, Everett, Chemeketa and Grays Harbor were each eliminated after day one.
