North Idaho Sweeps Men’s & Women’s Golf Championship Titles

YAKIMA, Wash. – After going undefeated during the regular season, the North Idaho men's and women's golf teams continued their domination during the 2024 season, sweeping both titles at the NWAC Golf Championships at Apple Tree Golf Course on Monday.

The Cardinals men's golf team claimed its historic sixth-straight championship, becoming the first program to win six championships in a row since Everett won nine-straight from 1947-1956. However, with no golf season in 1952, the Cardinals are first program to win in six consecutive years.

The North Idaho women's team won its second title all-time and first since 2016. It is the first time a school has won both titles in the same year since 2011 when Spokane took home both trophies.

Men's Tournament
The Cardinal men took home the team title with an impressive score of 3-under par over the two-round tournament. North Idaho won by 13 strokes, besting Spokane's score of 10-over par. NIC led both rounds, winning round one by seven strokes and round two by six strokes. Southwestern Oregon took third at +36, followed by Columbia Basin at +44 and Skagit Valley at +48.

Spokane's Trey Lecheminant won medalist for the men's tournament, finishing with a two-round score of 137 for 7-under par. He won by one stroke over NIC's Josh McCartain, who finished at -6. McCartain, who was named Baden Golfer of the Year prior to the tournament, had the best round two score of 69.

The Cardinals showed their team depth with the No. 3, 5 and 6 finishers as Charlie Terwilliger (-2), Jarrett Giles (+2) and Spence Matson had strong performances. Highline's David Sibbett finished fourth with a score of 143 (-1). Sibbett had the best first round score of 64, but had a tougher round two with a score of 79.

Women's Tournament
The North Idaho women's team won by an even larger margin of 30 strokes, shooting 501 (+69) for the two rounds. Defending champions Bellevue took second place at +99, followed by Centralia at +105, Olympic at +142 and Skagit Valley at +150.

The women's medalist title went right down to the wire as Centralia's Jayda Thomas and Olympic's Nyah Dayton ended tied at +18. The two competed in a sudden death hole-off on hole 18. After the first round remaining tied, Thomas was able to win the second sudden death to claim medalist honors.

North Idaho showed its team depth on the women's side as well as they had the next five finishers after the top-two. Laila Jalil, who led the tournament after round one with a score of 79, took third place at +23. NIC's Ava Young and Sofia Lippiello tied for fourth (+25), followed by Lauryn Bulger (+27) and Rien Solodan (+28).
