North Idaho Men's & Women's Golf Teams Lead NWAC Championships After Day 1

YAKIMA, Wash. - The North Idaho men's and women's golf teams lead the way after Day 1 of the 2024 NWAC Golf Championships on Sunday at Apple Tree Golf Course.

The Cardinals men are looking for their sixth-straight NWAC title after finishing the regular season with wins in all four league matches. NIC leads the way with a team score of 3-under par with a total team score of 285 through the first round. Despite not having a golfer in the top-three on day one, the Cardinals are showing their overall team depth with four in the top-10. NWAC Men's Golfer of the Year Josh McCartain leads the Cardinals with a score of 3-under par to rank fourth overall.

Highline's David Sibbett leads all golfers with a first round score of 8-under par, shooting 64 for the round. Spokane's Trey Lecheminant is in second at 5-under par while Skagit Valley's Haiden Rasmussen ranks third at 4-under par.

As a team, Spokane is in second at 4-over par, just seven strokes behind the Cardinals. Skagit Valley is in third at +13, followed by Southwestern Oregon at +15 and Columbia Basin at +18.

On the women's side, the Cardinals enjoy a larger lead of 15 strokes as they shot 33-over par with a combined round one score of 249. Defending NWAC champions Bellevue are second at +48, followed closely by Centralia at +49, Olympic at +73 and Skagit Valley at +80.

NWAC Women's Golfer of the year Laila Jalil leads all players with a score of 7-over par, shooting 79 for round one. She is followed closely behind by Centralia's Jayda Thomas at +8, Olympic's Nyah Dyaton at +10 and Bellevue's Kelly Oo at +12. 

The tournament will conclude on Monday with round two, set for an 8 a.m. split start from Apple Tree Golf Course.
