Linn-Benton Uses 5-Run 7th Inning to Propel to Championship Monday with 8-6 over Spokane

LONGVIEW, Wash. – The Linn-Benton Roadrunners broke out with a five-run seventh inning to defeat Spokane 8-6 in Game 12 of the 2024 NWAC Baseball Championship on Sunday afternoon at David Story Field.

After trailing 5-0 through two and a half innings and 6-2 after six, the Roadrunners' offense exploded for five runs in the seventh inning to complete a comeback victory over Spokane. The win sends LBCC to Monday's championship day, where they will await either Lower Columbia or Tacoma in the first game at 12:05 p.m.

The Roadrunner comeback was sparked by a no-doubt, two-run home run by Kellen Segel that cut the deficit to 6-4. The offense continued the momentum with five-straight hits, with a two-RBI single by Aidan Dougherty, and RBI singles by Jordan Hockett and S. Sullivan. LBCC added on with another run in the eighth after a bases-loaded hit by pitch by Dougherty.

The bullpen was excellent for Linn-Benton, throwing a combined five shutout innings. Ever Lamm earned the win in relief, pitching 3.1 shutout innings with one hit allowed. Russell Holly entered in the eighth inning with one out and a runner on, getting the next two batters out to preserve the lead. Easton Corey then earned the save with a strikeout.

Spokane started the game with a 5-0 lead after scoring three runs in the second and two in the third. D. Gohl got the scoring started an RBI double, followed by an RBI single by Reese Vassar. C. Coffield followed up with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. The Sasquatch added on in the third as Vassar drove home a run on a fielder's choice. J. King later scored on a double steal.

Linn-Benton cut into the deficit in the bottom of the third as Dougherty had his first RBI of the game. Hockett then doubled him home to cut Spokane's lead to 5-2. Spokane added its last run in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout by Ricco Longo.

The Sasquatch's exciting run in the tournament ends on Sunday, but they had two thrilling wins including a walk-off win and a 13-inning nail biter. They end their season with an East region title, a 30-19 record and their 23rd trip in the NWAC tournament.

Linn-Benton will play on Monday at 12:05 p.m. needing two wins to take home the title. Depending on the result of Sunday's final game, the Roadrunners will either need to defeat Lower Columbia followed by Tacoma, or defeat Tacoma twice.
