SPOTLIGHT: Ciara Mennitto, Grays Harbor, Softball, Sophomore
Ciara is a student-athlete representative on the NWAC Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Committee.
Q. 1 - Why did you choose your current college?
I loved the atmosphere and coaching staff. Everyone was so welcoming and I felt I could be part of something bigger here.
Q. 2 - When did you start playing this sport and how has your experience been getting to play at this level?
I started playing when I was 7. Getting here was a lot of work and effort. However it's been amazing getting to meet girls from all over the country and getting to play alongside them. I've also made some of my best friends here.
Q. 3 - What is your favorite part about playing at this level?
The atmosphere. Everyone's here because they WANT to be. Not because they have to. And it's been amazing getting to compete with players I never would have gotten a chance to.
Q. 4 - Do you consider yourself a leader? If so, describe that about yourself either on or off the team.
I do personally. I was our only returning outfielder and I've really taken that into account and have done my best to step up and become a leader in the grass.
Q. 5 - Who is your greatest influence?
My family 100%. I have the best support system with my parents and siblings and I wouldn't be where I am without them.
Q. 6 - What advice do you have for incoming student-athletes?
Just have fun. This time goes by fast and making every moment count is so important.
Q. 7 - What is one challenge or obstacle that you have had to overcome in order to get where you are today?
Toxic coaching and being told I'm never going to make it as an outfielder and I'm going to fail in college.
Q. 8 - What are your plans after you graduate?
I'm transferring to Cottey College this fall to play softball.
Q. 9 - What is something you enjoy doing outside of your athletic pursuits?
Photography and reading.
Q. 10 - Name one fun fact about yourself.
I have two black labs.
Specific to being on the DEI Committee:
- In your role as a student-athlete leader, how do you promote diversity, equity, and inclusion both on and off the field?
- I love being an example for LGBT athletes. Especially getting to show girls that just because you don't portray a stereotypical femininity you're still valid in our sports world.
- Can you share an example of how your team or the committee has taken steps to foster a more inclusive environment? What was the outcome?
- I think the committee just bringing us all together is fostering an inclusive environment. My college is also great with having all of us feel welcome here regardless of our backgrounds.
- What are some challenges you believe student-athletes face when it comes to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and how do you think these challenges can be addressed?
- I think challenges faced are stereotypes. Also being made to feel like you don't belong somewhere because you aren't what someone thinks you should be or look like.
- How do you envision your role on the student-athlete committee contributing to creating a more inclusive and equitable environment for all student-athletes?
- I'm hoping to be able to assist on issues that the NWAC may deal with through our seasons. As well as to be a voice for others and be someone people can look at and relate to across the conference.
