Peninsula Captures Men's Soccer Title After Dramatic 11-Round PK Shootout

TUKWILA, Wash. - In one of the wildest finishes in NWAC Men's Soccer history, the Peninsula Pirates captured the 2023 championship title after a dramatic 11-round penalty kick shootout against Highline College on Sunday night at Starfire Stadium.

After finishing 110 minutes of regulation and overtime tied at 2-2, the championship match was sent to a penalty kick shootout. Both teams' shooters were on their mark during the shootout as the first 10 players scored on each side. Finally in the 11th round after each shooter had already attempted once, Peninsula goalkeeper Laurin Lettow made a diving stop on Highline's Dugsiye Ahmed on a shot that was otherwise destined for the back of the net.

The shootout alone had many dramatic moments as each keeper had a save called back by the official for coming off their line early. This gave the shooter a re-shot, which each scored on in both instances.

The two overtime periods were back-and-forth with neither team able to capitalize on a few scoring chances.

Damoni McKenna-Greenawalt had the tying goal for Highline in the 86th minute to send the match to overtime. Peninsula had taken the lead in the 55th minute on a goal by Abdurahim Leigh, assisted by Rei Sato after the teams were tied at halftime 1-1.

Peninsula's Matthew Enriquez opened the game quickly with a goal in the third minute, assisted on a header by Nil Grau. Highline answered back in the 19th minute as Zane May got his fourth goal of the tournament, assisted by Edgar Tamayo.

Grau was named the Tournament MVP after he scored the team's lone goal in the semifinals in a 1-0 win over Columbia Basin, adding an assist in the championship game and going 2-for-2 in the penalty kick shootout including the eventual winning PK in the 11th round.

The title is the sixth all-time for Peninsula, all since 2010. The Pirates have won six of the last 13 NWAC titles.

Highline completes an outstanding season with a 16-1-3 overall record and 2023 runners-up.
