NWAC Internships Outline (Remote)

POSITION: Intern (remote, unpaid) – Communications or Marketing and Operations

RESPONSIBLE TO: Alli Young, Dir. of Operations and/or Iain Dexter, Dir. of Athletic Communications

DURATION: Part-Time 10-20 hours per week, annual or seasonal positions available. Start and end dates are flexible. Specific days/hours agreed upon between NWAC and intern.

  • Fall: September 1 -  December 1
  • Winter: December 1 – April 1
  • Spring: April 1 -  July 1                                                                     

COMMUNICATIONS INTERN

AREAS OF FOCUS: Will vary from season to season, but in general, under the supervision of the Director of Athletic Communications, the NWAC intern will work on the following:

  • Collaborate with member schools to develop student-athlete special interest stories
  • Assist with Athlete of the Week organization and promotion
  • Maintain NWAC transfer map
  • Update and maintain email lists
  • Support NWAC podcast production
  • Develop NWAC statistical records database
  • Assist with website updates
  • Assist with graphic design

MARKETING & OPERATIONS INTERN

AREAS OF FOCUS: Will vary from season to season, but in general, under the supervision of the Director of Operations, the NWAC intern will work on the following:

  • Assist with NWAC championship events including:
    • Marketing
    • Digital ticketing
    • Sponsorships
    • Game-day experience
    • Pre- and post-event analysis
  • Assist with Hall of Fame marketing and operations
  • Assist with Hall of Fame Golf Tournament
  • Create graphics for and execute social media campaigns
  • Support partnership engagement and development efforts

ABOUT THE NWAC

The Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) is the athletics governing body for 36-member community colleges in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia, Canada. The NWAC sanctions seven men’s sports and eight women’s sports and hosts 15 championship events annually. For our student-athletes, community college athletics provide an opportunity to extend their playing career and hone their athletic skills while receiving a quality education. These opportunities will potentially springboard the student-athlete to a four-year university or straight into the workforce.

  • Choose to work during specific seasons that fit with your class schedule, and fulfill curriculum internship requirements

BASIC FUNCTIONS

Under general supervision, independently perform a variety of complex duties in the following possible areas of the NWAC: championship event operations, all-star events, marketing, compliance and rules, media production, social media engagement, sports information, special events, and other duties as necessary. Duties may involve frequent interaction both in person and remotely with office staff, athletic directors, coaches, student-athletes, businesses, sponsors, potential sponsors, and the general public.

These are unpaid internship opportunities; however, the expectation will be that all tasks are completed in a timely fashion and meet the standards of the NWAC. 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong passion for intercollegiate athletics
  • Excellent organizational, written, verbal skills, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include nights and weekends as well as travel to athletic events
  • Ability to multi-task, work independently, and in a team environment
  • Ability to work remotely and commit to regular remote check-ins
  • Ability to be creative and energetic, working well with a variety of constituents in various activities
  • Demonstrated commitment to details and successful promotional initiatives
  • Ability to work well under pressure and maintain a positive customer/client service attitude
  • Working knowledge of programs including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite for digital media (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premier Pro)
  • Experience with social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube
  • Valid driver’s license with reliable vehicle if needed to travel to athletic events
