Highline College Tennis Standouts Earn PacWest All-Academic Honors

IRVINE – In the 2018-19 Academic All-PacWest team, there are 1,553 student-athletes who earned recognition across the PacWest's 15 sports, including a record 39 students with a 4.00 grade-point average.

Among these honorees are five Stanislaus State student-athletes from the women's tennis team. Cassidy Ferrell, Amila Gogalija, Megan Hagerty, Kayla Nguyen and Sylvana Talamantes are all recipients of this award.

Nguyen leads this group of Warriors with a 3.90 grade-point-average as a biological sciences major. She's followed by Ferrell, NCAA Woman of the Year nominee and first-team All-PacWest star, who posted a 3.88 GPA as a liberal studies major. Talamantes, a freshman who has not declared a major, had a 3.49 in her first year while Gogalija (3.33, business management and international busines) and Hagerty (3.10, psychology) round out the recipients.
 
For the second year in a row, Biola led all schools in honorees with 195 student-athletes meeting the requirements for the honor. That is 19 more than the previous year for the Eagles, who had 29 student-athletes earn recognition from the women's track & field team as well as 26 from the women's soccer team.
 
The largest number of student-athletes to earn recognition from a single team was Concordia's women's track & field program for the second year in a row with 37 award-winners, which is three more than last year. Concordia had a total of 159 student-athletes honored. Point Loma had the third-most student-athletes earn recognition with 154, which includes 25 from the baseball team that reached the NCAA West Regional.
 
Of the 37 student-athletes with perfect 4.0 GPAs, there are two grad students, who are Christina DenBoer and Lukas Motschmann. There are also six seniors with a perfect cumulative GPA: Ashley Julio, Cassidy Towner, Fabian Lueders, Michael Palos, Alyssa Tanigawa and Jordan Tagawa. 
 
Student-athletes who achieve at least a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, completed at least two semesters at their institution and participated in regular season competition in a PacWest sponsored sport receive Academic All-PacWest recognition.
