Whatcom goalkeeper Erin Smith signs with Western Washington University Women's Soccer

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University head women's soccer coach Travis Connell has announced that goalkeeper Erin Smith, a transfer from Whatcom Community College, will join the Vikings as a junior for the upcoming 2019 season.

Smith, a 6-0 goalkeeper who starred during her prep career at Bellevue Christian, joins the 2019 recruiting class that now includes nine players. The class features four midfielders, two defenders, two forwards and Smith as the lone goalkeeper, with seven of the nine hailing from the state of Washington.

"Erin brings experience as a starting college goalkeeper and a successful college student to our program," said WWU head coach Travis Connell. "She is a tremendous athlete that uses her length to dominate high balls and make big time saves.  She will add depth to our goalkeeper position and character to our team."

Earned All-Star status in the North Region for Whatcom Community College as a sophomore in 2018…helped lead WWU to a 10-8-1 overall record and 2nd-place finish in the North Region with a 9-5-1 record…ranked 15th in the NWAC with a 1.22 goals against average and tied for 5th with 5 shutouts…appeared in 28 games (24 starts) during her career with the Orcas…was a three-year varsity letterwinner at Bellevue Christian…Nisqually All-League Second Team in 2013 and 2014, and a first-team selection in 2015…also earned two varsity letters in softball…product of club program Crossfire Premier.

"Erin led our defense in 2018 to a 2nd-place in the North division, and was named an NWAC All-star as a sophomore.  Her growth as a player from her freshman to her sophomore year proved that the time she spent in the off-season, working to improve her game, paid off. I couldn't be more excited to see Erin reach her goal of playing at Western.   She has been a dually-enrolled student at WWU and WCC the past two years, which is challenging, but she was able to balance her school and athletic responsibilities while maintaining a strong GPA. This fall, she was awarded a Fall Academic Excellence award. It will be great to cheer on Erin in a Viking uniform."
